Judith Kennedy - Considering Developmental Stages in Coaching

Abraham Maslow was a famous psychologist who developed the theory that
people must meet their basic needs in a sequential manner before they are
free to meet their more ethereal needs, which he called self-actualization.
I have found having his hierarchy in mind while coaching helps me to help
people move from meeting their basic needs : physical needs, need for
safety, need for love/belonging and need for self esteem, toward addressing
their true potential. This is particularly helpful when a person seems
"stuck", which seems to happen if they believe they are in some way not
completely safe. The need for safety does not necessarily have to be a
reality, but can be the client's perception.
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is represented in a triangle with physical
needs taking up the bottom, and the others above in a hierarchical manner,
representing that one needs to meet all physical needs before he/she can
meet the need for safety, and ongoing up the hierarchy. I will bring
handouts describing.
The books I have written which have won awards are 3 social skills
curriculums; for grades k-3, 4-6 and 7-8. These books have been cited as
examples of Exemplary Mental Health Programs and also won the President's
Award for curriculum that has proven to decrease the propensity for
violence in schools. The curriculum is called Getting to Know You and is
published by Educational Media.
Judith Kennedy's life history includes award-winning
author, parent, educator, school psychologist and life coach. In coaching
Judith discovered using Maslow's Stages of Development a useful tool in
helping people become "unstuck" and move toward the life of their dreams.
Judith bases her Life Coaching in spirituality, and she enjoys the process
of co-creating in the coaching relationship. People make astounding changes
in their lives when given the sacred space and feedback to do so.
