NCCA Meeting Minutes
26 June 2003
Attendees
- Joan, Bobbie, Sue, John, Mindy, Diane, Lucinda, Lynne, Christine, Carl, Tony
How do you describe coaching when people ask you what it is?
- I help people bring their authentic contributions to the world
- I help people figure out what they want to do with their career and figure out how to
get it
- I'm a midwife of dreams
- I use the words incredible, inspiration, dreams
- I help people figure out what they want to be when they grow up
- I focus on goals and growth, on strength rather than dysfunction
- I help people achieve any of their goals
- I help you do what you know you should be doing, and if you don't know, I help you
figure that out
- I help people through transition by discovering the clarity of their passion
- I help people see possibilities they're not aware of, to achieve their goals
NoCoNet
- John is working with a bunch of people who are starting a group called NoCoNet to help
people who are out of work.
- It's a weekly forum starting at 8:30 on June 30th.
- The website is www.noconet.org.
Summer Coaching League
- Irene should be sending out the information soon.
Budget Guidelines
- We'll try to cover this at the next meeting since Martha wasn't here today
- Martha is the keeper of the budget, and the leadership circle makes big decisions around
where to spend our money.
Update on Colorado Regulations - Christine
- Currently the Colorado law says that coaches should register as unlicensed therapists,
$200/year with more information supplied
- Currently this covers life coaching, not corporate coaching, but that might be changing
- You would be bound by their code of ethics, need to take a jurisprudence workshop
- This law is due to sunset this year
- Pat is working with an ICF-attached group (the "dirty dozen") on how/when/if
coaching should be regulated by the government - this group is focused on Colorado and
there's a larger ICF group looking at the big picture of regulation
- The group is looking at compelling reasons for why the law should be changed
- There's a lot of implications of making progress on this issue: Need to define coaching,
need to reconcile different definitions, need to relate to other professions, what
profession will "own" coaching,
.
- The group should be more proactive about letting people know what's going on. It's a
tough task!
- If you want to know what's going on or want to influence the process, contact Christine
at < christine@hawkview.net >.
ICF Research Symposium - Diane
- This will be in Denver on November 12th
- There will be some interesting talks about theory, research that's been done
- This is helping to position Northern Colorado as a base of coaching research
- Diane and Irene are going to the first research-based conference in Sydney next month
- Diane is getting to start a study with Regis
- CoachVille is starting a peer review journal for review of research
- Diane is going to be the ICF research community liaison
- Diane's paper is attached
Powerful Choices for a Power-full Life - Christine
- Julio Olalla is holding a workshop in Santa Fe September 11-12
- He's pretty leading edge, talks about our role and responsibility to the community,
directing our profession
- Julio is moving to Boulder
- To build awareness around this, they're willing to hold a teleconference for us
- Christine will send out a poll, looking to schedule the call around the week of July
28th, probably at 5:30pm. Tuesday looks best. Christine will get back to us with details.
- The website is: www.newfieldnetwork.com
What do we want to bring to the ICF Conference?
Ideas we've heard
- The Denver group would like to have a party sponsored by Colorado coaches
- As individuals we can act as greeters, hosts
- We could sell some ball caps that have values printed all over them
- Oxygen bar
- Have a room where we facilitate some discussions about regulation, could have some
really hard and probing discussions
- People promote some of the unique things they're doing, announce it and have a
discussion - a hospitality room with open discussions facilitated by various people
- A "coaching salon"
Impact we might like to have on the conference
- Community building within our state
- Impact on the coaching community as a whole
- Establish Colorado as a leader in regulation, in research
- Facilitating the ease of the conference
- Take the conference's theme to a very very high level
- Have the ICF impact Denver and Colorado in a very cool way - community outreach
- The theme "being of service" can be applied in many ways - being of service to
other coaches, to the community,
. - it can be a theme for the week
Things we could do
- Some tables where people can meet over lunch
- Have more access to author-coaches from Colorado, get more exposure, develop a more
heart-centered relationship with them
- Coach people in the community for free, contribute to some very important community
issues
- A community outreach - open talk to the community, open coaching to the community at
Fiddler's Green - show the power of coaching
- Specific areas of needs: shelters, out-of-work
- A call center, partner with a TV station [a person at the Denver chapter is hooked up to
channel 9] - different coaching specialties during periods of time
- Have coaches go out to various locations "coaching on the road"
- Coaching civil service, coaching at shelters,
- Have a party, perhaps in celebration of these other activities
- Connect with a radio/TV station
- The hats are a neat identifier, recognition
- Clear Channel Radio might be very open to sponsoring something
- Get donations to fund someone to have a coach for a year - coaching scholarships for the
general public, coach can offer it at a reduced price
- Recognize various schools of coaching by having coaches from different schools do
coaching
- Change the language around "regulation" to be more "being of
service"
- Offer coaching or other information to the Colorado lawmakers
- Take a bunch of coaches to the state capitol and give a presentation
- "Model of Excellence" theme: excellent service, getting great feedback and
acting on it, ombudsman/concierge
- Help by meeting the needs identified by the volunteer coordination committee (Margaret
Hensle)
- Welcome in the airport
- Water bottles, skin cream, massage people, relaxing music
- Fact sheets about Colorado, conference
- Make it very clear who is sponsoring this, clearly identifiable, "Colorado Coaches
in Service: A Model of Excellence"
- Provide a way for people to be active, to contribute, to get involved
- See if we can find a company that can make CDs of what we're doing
- Computer hookup in the salon
Next steps
- A circle of people who would like to focus on this: Christine, Lynne, Joan, Lucinda,
Diane, Tony
- Anybody else who would like to be involved please contact Lynne at < whirldpeaz@attbi.com >
- Christine will take these ideas to the other coaching chapters to see where they have
energy
Why would other Colorado coaches want to get involved in this?
- Be as cool as us :-)
- Join in the energy
- More expansive thinking
- Being more positive (what can we give -vs- what will regulation do to us)
- Attract more clients
- Create an identity for Colorado coaching
Facilitator for next meeting
- John Spencer volunteered - thank you!
