14 February 2003
It was with great sadness that we heard the news that Thomas Leonard, Coach U, ICF, and Coachville founder, died at his home in Phoenix on Wed., February 12 of a heart attack. I actually met Thomas a few years ago in Denver on a stop of his millennium coaching tour. At that session, I was deeply impressed by Thomas' energy, his clarity of vision, and indeed, his forward-looking vision of what will be important for the world. I knew I was in the presence of a genius, and one of the great entrepreneurs of the early 21st century.
I also, like many of you and coaches all over the world, have benefited greatly from the manifestation of his earlier visions. He foresaw a profession that he named coaching, and has been referred to by many as the Father of Coaching. He pioneered the virtual university and put in place Coach U as a successful example. His vision of coaching as ubiquitous in the world has been expressed through his continuous development of Coachville, an international virtual community of coaches and those interested in coaching.
The energy in which he lived his life and his dreams will be a role-model for me and many others, I'm sure. And if the true measure of one's life is not how long it is, but how many people one has touched, then Thomas Leonard has certainly left an enormous and lasting legacy. He will be missed, and his mission continues through all of us.
