Joan King

Success Coach

Joan’s background reveals her passion for evoking greatness – a constant in her life. Joan began her academic career, teaching all the college chemistry courses at an all girls college in New Orleans, convinced that everyone can tap into its secrets. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Neurosciences and Physiological Psychology from Tulane University in 1972, Joan took postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa Medical School, then at Tulane University, joined the faculty at Tulane University and, in 1979, joined the faculty of Tufts University Schools of Medicine. During her 20-year tenure at Tufts, Joan directed her research lab and taught medical student Neuroscience, committed to their learning. Joan was appointed Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cellular Biology at Tufts Medical School in 1992 and Director of a Research Center. Having served as Chair and Center Director for 5 years Joan decided to leave academia. Her decision emerged from her passion for a larger playing field and her desire to help many more people evoke their greatness, in addition to those she encountered in an academic setting. Immediately upon leaving academia, Joan commenced a two-year study with Jean Houston, a leader in the human potential movement and began her coach training.

In 1999 Joan was awarded the distinguished title Professor Emerita by Tufts University School of Medicine, reserved for those who make significant contributions to the University.

Leaving academia, Joan reflected on her scientific knowledge and re-envisioned her extensive knowledge of cells and systems from a novel perspective. She articulated original ways of viewing scientific principles -- as metaphors and tools to expand consciousness. Joan took 1˝ years to write her book Cellular Wisdom, published in 2004. In it Joan explores our bodies as teachers of how we can live exuberantly, individually and in relationships from intimate to corporate. Coaching exercises appear in each chapter.

Her coaching philosophy is that life emerges from an individual’s core beliefs and the focus of their thinking. She integrates her analytical skills honed by her scientific training and practice with her coaching expertise to help people simultaneously achieve success and go beyond success to self-actualization as leaders and entrepreneurs,. She does this by helping clients recognize and uncover their strengths, unfold aspects of their authentic self, unmask limiting core beliefs and recast them as actualizing principles, integrate deep understandings, claim their creativity, in a process that leads to full, authentic self-expression. Her training, experience and coaching philosophy make Joan a uniquely qualified coach to help people evoke their greatness.

Joan is certified as a Master Certified Coach by the International Coach Federation (ICF), a Success Unlimited Network™ certified coach and coach trainer, and representative of the SUN coaching program to the Association of Coach Training Organizations.

Married for 27 years, Joan and her husband, also a Neuroscientist, live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado on 40 acres of land with two cats. While at Tufts, she and her husband lived in Boston and New Hampshire.
